Can a Canadian Citizen visiting temporarily also work in the US?

I have a Canadian friend who is wanting to visit the US for a year till I can move up there for school. Is it possible for him to work here while he visits? And if so what type of work visa would he have to get? He would only be able to do something simple like a department manager or just a hourly associate. He only has work experience as a hourly associate/temp manager at Zehrs for 5 years.
